Plot summary
Mária Drazdechová arrives at a suburban school near Bratislava in 1983, and the parents of her pupils soon learn what her goodwill costs. She asks them for favors and services, and children from families that refuse are tormented and marked down in class. Because she chairs the school's Communist Party branch, the head teacher will not step in. When one of her pupils attempts suicide, the principal summons the parents to a meeting about a petition that would remove her from the school. Some families speak up for her, while others, wary of her party connections, would rather not sign.
