Plot summary

Shohoku High School's point guard is Ryota Miyagi, now in his second year. He relies on his mind and his speed, slipping past opponents while pretending to be composed. His older brother Sota, three years his senior, gave him his love of basketball. With Hanamichi Sakuragi, Takenori Akagi, Hisashi Mitsui and Kaede Rukawa beside him, Ryota has reached the Inter-High School National Championship, where the reigning champions, Sannoh Kogyo High School, await.

Toei Animation producer Toshiyuki Matsui assembled a team led by Naoki Miyahara and Toshio Ohashi that spent nearly five years developing 3DCG prototype videos, and a second prototype that cost nearly as much as an entire movie was rejected for straying from Takehiko Inoue's vision.
Takehiko Inoue replaced the TV anime's voice actors for the film, saying he could not ask the originals to throw away the understanding of the characters they had built up, and chose the new cast for their natural voices rather than their acting skill.
The film blends 3DCG for its basketball scenes with hand-drawn 2D animation for daily life scenes, and some 2D basketball scenes used motion capture as reference, with professional basketball players brought in to review how the game was depicted.
The Japanese Blu-ray release of The First Slam Dunk took the top four spots on Oricon's Weekly Blu-ray Disc Ranking through its various editions, the first time a single work had ever done so in the ranking's history.
In China, The First Slam Dunk opened to a record $56 million weekend, beating Jackie Chan's Ride On and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and set records including the highest pre-sales for an animated import and the highest IMAX opening for a foreign animated film in China.
