Plot summary

As a girl, Šarlota ran away from her abusive mother and was never found. Now a young woman, she returns to her village after the mayor writes asking her to collect her mother's inheritance. The neighbors greet her with suspicion and superstition: she and her sister Tamara were once said to have been taken by Otyla, a neighbor accused of witchcraft. The mayor is away, so Šarlota settles into her burnt-out childhood home and befriends a local woman, Mira. She searches the village for answers about her troubled childhood, while old legends press into the present. The villagers accuse her of murder and witchcraft.
