Plot summary
Lucien de Rubempré is twenty years old, a poet from a lower-class family in Angoulême, and the household he leaves behind runs a printing house. In the 1820s he departs after a contentious affair with Louise de Bargeton, a woman of local society, and makes for Paris. He is sensitive, idealistic and handsome, and he is determined that the literary world should take notice of him. In Paris he discovers what making ends meet will require of him: he writes reviews of the theater, and low-brow journalism takes hold of him. His boss there is Étienne Lousteau, whose manners are crude.
