Plot summary
In an unnamed town on the New Mexico border, Jerry Manning promotes nightclub acts. He rents a black leopard as a stunt for Kiki Walker, the performer he is dating, and she makes an entrance leading the animal on a leash. Her rival Clo-Clo frightens it with her castanets, and the leopard escapes into the night. Charlie, who owns the cat and rented it to Jerry, begins asking him for money to replace it. Teresa, a young woman of the town, goes out to buy corn meal for the family dinner and encounters the animal under a bridge in an arroyo.
