Plot summary

Dan Kristensen is an ordinary businessman who comes home to his apartment after a long business trip and finds that his wife, Edwige, is gone. Nothing in the rooms points to violence. He begins at his own door and works his way through the building to see whether he can find her, and every door leaves him without her. What the residents give him instead are their own stories and their own secrets. Cryptic messages from these neighbors steer him through the labyrinthine halls, and his effort to explain her disappearance becomes a surreal kaleidoscope of half-formed leads, seduction and deceit, drawing him further into the building.
