Plot summary
Samuel, the prophet, chastises King Saul for failing to obey the instructions of Yahweh in battle, and tells him that another king will be anointed in his place. Saul is distraught, and his general Abner, an old friend, counsels him. Saul also withdraws from time to time because of an oppressive illness, and the music of David, a shepherd who has become his lyre player and armorer, eases his troubled mind. The young David prevails in single combat against Goliath, and a second victory over the Philistines follows. Saul is filled with jealous rage at the people's acclaim of David.
