Norman Rodway

Biography

Norman Rodway was an Anglo-Irish actor whose career centered on the stage but also took in radio, television and film. Born in Dalkey, he studied classics at Trinity College Dublin and worked as an accountant and lecturer before acting. His stage debut came in 1953 at the Cork Opera House, he first appeared in London's West End in 1959 in Cock-A-Doodle Dandy, and he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966. Among his theater roles were Bassov in Summerfolk and the leads in Butley and Richard III. His expressive voice led to many BBC radio broadcasts, while television work included Reilly, Ace of Spies, The Bretts, Rumpole of the Bailey and Inspector Morse. He acted alongside Orson Welles in I'll Never Forget What's'isname (1967) and Chimes at Midnight (1965). He often played villains, among them Adolf Hitler in The Empty Mirror (1999).
