Plot summary
SpongeBob SquarePants is a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, and his boss Mr. Krabs has opened a second Krusty Krab beside the first. SpongeBob hopes to manage the new restaurant, but Mr. Krabs picks Squidward Tentacles for the job and tells SpongeBob he is a kid, too young for it. SpongeBob eats ice cream at the Goofy Goober parlor with his best friend Patrick Star. King Neptune's crown then disappears and Mr. Krabs is blamed. Neptune freezes him and demands the crown's return. SpongeBob promises to bring it from Shell City; Patrick argues the ten-day limit down to six, after which Mr. Krabs will be executed. Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Stephen Hillenburg meant the film to end SpongeBob SquarePants, wanting to stop before the show "jumped the shark", but Nickelodeon could not afford to lose a hit, so he resigned as showrunner and handed the series to writer Paul Tibbitt.
- The crew built a 12-foot, 750-pound replica of David Hasselhoff that cost $100,000. He took it home afterwards and said it freaked him out because it was so lifelike, with teeth and skin that felt real.
- The pirates who sing the theme song in the 30-second opening were filmed aboard the Bounty, a 180-foot reconstruction of the 1787 Royal Navy ship built for the 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty and later used in two Pirates of the Caribbean films.
- When Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne proposed a duet with Justin Timberlake for the soundtrack, Hillenburg turned it down, saying he did not want "those sort of commercial weirdos" and preferring the music he liked himself.
- Wilco joined the soundtrack because a producer spotted a SpongeBob air freshener hanging from Jeff Tweedy's rear-view mirror in the band documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart; Tweedy said he fell for a character who called the deep sea "advanced darkness".
- Hillenburg kept control of the merchandising and blocked a fast-food push, calling that food "full of hidden additives" and saying that although Burger King could make toys and watches, selling the food itself was "crossing the line".
- Burger King put 9-foot inflatable SpongeBobs on about 4,700 roofs, then had to watch them vanish. The chain offered a year's supply of Whoppers for information; one turned up on an Iowa college 50-yard line, one under a bed in Virginia, one with a ransom note.
- It was the first film ever to sponsor a NASCAR race, the 300-mile SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on 15 October 2004, and the first race to give children at the track their own kid-friendly radio broadcast.
