Plot summary
Megan, fourteen and fearful of new things, has a confident friend in Paige. Their friend Anna Maria hosts a sleepover on the eve of her birthday, the same day her father is to marry, a wedding that will add step-siblings, among them the overconfident Veronica. Anna Maria resents both the wedding and the hike her father insists on. Her younger sister Penny is shut out of the party. Veronica invites Mesmer, a hypnotist, and the girls agree to be put under. In the morning Megan's left eyebrow is shaved, Jake's hoodie, her crush's, is on her, ducks sit in the bathtub, and Anna Maria is gone; the girls keep it from Anna Maria's mother and go looking.
