Plot summary
In Boston, teenager Clancy Finch wants to go to a party thrown by her crush, Travis Schultz, but her parents ground her, so she and her friend Mim slip out during a sleepover. Her younger brother Kevin is filmed by older students while dancing in a school bathroom; their mother Margot, a strict lunch monitor, steps in, and the video goes viral. Kevin and his friend Lewis then watch two strangers break into the house, hold their father Ron at gunpoint and demand that Margot, whom they call Matilda, come with them. Margot leaves a necklace behind as a clue. A U.S. Marshal, Henry Gibbs, turns up inside the house, and he tells them Margot has been in witness protection since she helped put away a crime syndicate boss.
