Plot summary
Maleficent grows up in the Moors, a magical forest realm, and befriends a human boy named Stefan. She becomes the land's protector, while he leaves to seek power among humans. When King Henry's army moves to conquer the Moors, Maleficent wounds him, and Henry promises his throne to whoever proves her dead. Stefan drugs her and cuts off her wings for that proof. Maleficent frees a raven, Diaval, gives him a man's shape, and he serves as her wings. When Stefan's daughter Aurora is christened, Maleficent arrives uninvited and curses the baby: before sunset on her sixteenth birthday, the princess will prick her finger on a spindle and fall into a sleep like death. Stefan hides Aurora with three pixies, and Maleficent seals the Moors behind a wall of thorns.

- Angelina Jolie was paid roughly $33 million to play Maleficent, a fee that made her the highest-paid actress of 2013.
- In 2018, Bulgarian actor Peter Baykov performed a one-time screening of the film in Sofia in which he dubbed every single character himself live, switching his voice between male and female roles on the spot; the stunt later helped land him a season-finale run on Bulgaria's Got Talent and, eventually, the role of Prince Philip in the Bulgarian dub of the sequel.
- Angelina Jolie was the only actress ever considered for the title role, and producers Sean Bailey and Joe Roth both said afterward that the film simply would not have been made at all if Jolie had turned it down.
