Plot summary
Anna, an archaeologist, needs a discovery that will make her name, and she believes the disused London hospital where she has been digging holds one. Plague spores are found in its medieval foundations, the authorities shut the site and approve the building's demolition, and her museum colleagues dismiss her theory that a run of unexplained child deaths there, dating to 1665, is more than coincidence. That night she breaks back in to gather proof. Nick is out for his twenty-first birthday with his girlfriend Joolz, his friend Steve and Steve's younger brother Clive, and a joyride goes badly wrong. They hide out in the hospital, where Anna is searching. Beneath the building, in its old orphanage, a seventeenth-century malevolence called the Plague Doctor has returned.
