- Musician Eric Clapton co-composed the film's score with Alan Clark, but no soundtrack album was released until 2010, when former Oingo Boingo guitarist Steve Bartek issued the main and end-credit themes.
- Strieber insisted the film be made independently, worried that a major studio would turn his personal story into a special-effects-driven horror film instead of a character study.
- Strieber said crew members mocked him on set over the autobiographical nature of the story, later summing up the experience as a mixed bag of people.
- Strieber himself dismissed the film in an interview, saying its reading of events was too literal compared with his book: the beings were very solid, but his glimpses of them were brief, and there was too much light on them.
- Author Whitley Strieber based the film directly on his own claimed real-life encounter with alien 'visitors', with Christopher Walken cast to portray Strieber himself.
