Plot summary
Signs of the Biblical apocalypse are appearing around the world: the sea life of Haiti dies, a town in the Middle East freezes. At each site a traveler opens a sealed envelope just before the event. The Vatican asks Father Lucci to investigate, and he advises that the phenomena are hoaxes or have scientific explanations. In California, Abby Quinn is pregnant, her child due on February 29 of a leap year, and her husband Russell, a lawyer, represents Jimmy Szaragosa, a man with Down syndrome accused of killing his parents because God ordered him to. For extra income the couple rents a room to David Bannon, who tells them the Hebrew myth of the Guf, the storehouse of souls. Abby begins to have nightmares, and her body reacts in ways she cannot explain.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Seventh Sign (1988)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- An effects scene was cut in which David conjures a bridge of light between the house and his garage apartment: Abby's foot falls through it while her dog Ace trots across unharmed. Test audiences giggled at the dog, and the moment undercut the later stabbing.
- Director Carl Schultz deliberately held optical effects to a minimum, modeling his approach on Val Lewton's horror films because he believed suggestion would work better on an audience than spectacle.
