Plot summary
Jo Ann Foley is fourteen and lives in rural Tennessee during World War II. Her grandfather Hank makes his living as a bootlegger, and he abuses her. Jo Ann's mother, Marie, has been forced into prostitution, and Jo Ann has been forced into that life as well. She gets away now and then and stays with Honey and Too Tall, an African American couple who give her love and protection.
