Plot summary
Mathayus once ruled as the Scorpion King, but a plague killed his queen Cassandra and his kingdom fell apart. He returns to life as a mercenary, and Horus, king of Egypt, hires him. Horus's younger brother Talus wants the throne for himself and raids the Far East for the Book of the Dead, which can raise an army of ghost warriors. Horus pairs Mathayus with Olaf, a Teutonic warrior, and sends them to the palace of Ramusan, a Hindu king and Horus's ally who guards the book. Talus has kidnapped Ramusan's daughter Silda. Ramusan promises Mathayus her hand, and with it a kingdom of his own, if he brings her back. A mysterious ninja band called Cobra also wants her.

- The filmmakers planned for Zulu Kondo to throw his hammer and have it magically fly back to his hand, but cut the shot after seeing the 2011 movie Thor had already done the same thing.
- The script set most of the film in Europe, but the limited budget moved the shoot to Thailand, where it was cheaper to film; CGI added the desert sand around Horus's city.
- The battle scenes had 400 extras, but most of the fighting was done by the main cast plus only 12 stunt men, who played multiple roles in different costumes so they could appear in every battle.
- Many scenes were shot at tourist locations the crew could not reserve for themselves, so filming frequently had to stop when tourists walked through the scene.
