Plot summary
Deep in a Pennsylvania coal mine, a stone marked with Norse runes is brought up and shipped to New York City, where archaeologists examine it and death follows. Captain Gregory Fanducci of the police works the case that grows around it. Sam Stewart and his wife Marla trace a connection between the stone and their friend Martin Almquist, while a boy named Jacob is troubled by nightmares of what is coming. Jacob's uncle Lars Hagstrom explains those dreams through the old Norse stories, which hold that Fenrir can be destroyed only by Týr, a god prophesied to return and fight the creature.
