Biography

Alexander Godunov was a Russian-American ballet dancer and actor. Born in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, he started ballet lessons in Riga at nine. He rose to premier danseur at the Bolshoi Ballet, earned a gold medal at the 1973 Moscow International Ballet Competition, and received the title Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1976. Roles in Anna Karenina and 31 June made him a known film actor in the Soviet Union. After leaving the Soviet Union in 1979, he danced with American Ballet Theatre until 1982 and then toured as a guest artist. In Hollywood he played an Amish farmer in Witness (1985), a self-absorbed conductor in The Money Pit (1986), and a thief in Die Hard (1988). He turned down parts that would have cast him as a dancer or an action villain, which may have limited his career. He died in 1995.
