Plot summary
Jeff Donavan was never a good boy. He was always bad and was always fascinated in the story of the Blair Witch, just like victim Heather Donahue of Blair Witch 1. After the success of the movie, Jeff opens up a Blair Witch tour of Black Hills for his way to cash in on the movie hoopla. But when four people take the tour and decide to rest at Rustin Parr's house (Rustin was the person who murdered seven children under the Blair Witch's command), the four lose five hours of their memories. But after they return to find Jeff while trying to understand the bizarre symbols on their bodies, all five people will finally know that some fiction isn't really fiction and that when they left the Black Hills, they left with something... or someone.

SPOILER
Artisan forced director Joe Berlinger to re-cut Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and shoot extra scenes adding traditional horror elements to make it more commercial; the footage of the main characters murdering the foreign tourists was shot in Berlinger's backyard weeks before the release date and cut in as flash frames.- The original cut of the film opened with Frank Sinatra's song "Witchcraft", but the studio replaced it with Marilyn Manson's "Disposable Teens".
- Tristine Skyler first auditioned for the part Erica Leerhsen won, while Leerhsen auditioned for the part Kim Director got; Leerhsen, a short-haired blonde in real life, was given hair extensions and red dye, and Jeffrey Donovan tried out for Stephen Barker Turner's role before Berlinger cast him as the group's leader.
- The DVD and VHS came with a featurette on "The Secret of Esrever", reverse spelled backwards, explaining near-subliminal words and images placed throughout the film; viewers were urged to watch scenes in reverse or frame by frame, given the clues "door", "water", "mirror", "rug" and "grave".
- While writing the screenplay, Joe Berlinger went to the real town of Burkittsville, the setting of The Blair Witch Project, and interviewed locals about how the release of that film had affected their lives; many of those people became direct inspirations for the characters in Book of Shadows.
- The stone ruins of the Rustin Parr house in the film were constructed out of styrofoam in Gwynns Falls Leakin Park, where the characters' camping scenes were also shot.
