Tri Oceanic Mining Corporation keeps eight people 16,000 feet below the Atlantic, extracting silver, and geologist Steven Beck runs the station. His crew includes Dr. Glen 'Doc' Thompson, Elizabeth 'Willie' Williams, Buzz 'Sixpack' Parrish, Justin Jones, Tony 'DeJesus' Rodero, Bridget Bowman and G. P. Cobb. On one of their last days, Willie and Sixpack work outside and Sixpack falls into a hole. Searching for him, Willie finds a sunken Soviet ship, the Leviathan, and the crew hauls up a safe holding money, vodka, a videotape and documents. Beck and Doc watch the tape, in which the Russian captain describes a medical problem that killed his own crew. Sixpack drinks a bottle of the vodka with Bowman. He wakes up sick, and a hurricane on the surface rules out a rescue.
