Plot summary
A successful banker in San Francisco, Johnny shares a townhouse with his fiancée, Lisa. Lisa has grown disenchanted with their relationship and begins a secret affair with Mark, Johnny's best friend. Mark is torn about the deception. When Johnny is passed over for a promotion at work, Lisa gets the two of them drunk to lift his mood. Johnny also looks after Denny, a college student who lives nearby and leans on him for money and support. When Denny falls behind on a debt to Chris-R, an armed drug dealer, Johnny and Mark rescue him from being shot on the rooftop.

- Greg Sestero recalls in The Disaster Artist that Tommy Wiseau planned a subplot revealing Johnny to be a vampire, and tasked the crew with devising a way for Johnny's Mercedes-Benz to fly across the San Francisco skyline, revealing his vampiric nature.
- Tommy Wiseau wanted to be the first director to shoot an entire movie simultaneously in 35 mm film and high-definition video. He had a custom-built apparatus made to hold both cameras side by side, requiring two crews, though only the 35 mm footage was used in the final cut.
- Greg Sestero joined the crew of The Room only as a favor to his friend Tommy Wiseau, then took the role of Mark after Wiseau fired the original actor on the first day of filming.
- Kyle Vogt, who played Peter, told the production he had only limited time and left before all his scenes were shot, even though Peter was pivotal to the climax. His lines in the second half of the film went to Greg Ellery, whose character is never introduced, explained or named.
- Script supervisor Sandy Schklair said in 2011 that Wiseau, too busy with his acting, asked him to tell the actors what to do and yell "Action" and "Cut", and to "direct [his] movie", but refused to give up the director title.
- Tommy Wiseau paid $5,000 a month to keep The Room's single Hollywood billboard up for over five years. Its bizarre imagery and longevity turned it into a minor tourist attraction.
- Room Full of Spoons, Rick Harper's Canadian documentary about The Room, became the subject of legal proceedings by Tommy Wiseau, who claimed copyright infringement and invasion of privacy. In 2020 Ontario Superior Court judge Paul Schabas dismissed the suit and ordered Wiseau to pay the filmmakers nearly 1 million CAD in countersuit damages and lost revenue.
- Michael Rousselet, one of the few people at an early screening, found unintentional humor in the film and urged friends to come mock it. About 100 attended the final screening, where traditions like throwing spoons and footballs were born.
