Tommy Wiseau
Biography
Tommy Wiseau is an American actor and filmmaker. Born in Poznań, Poland, he was the writer, producer, director, and star of The Room (2003), a film critics widely called one of the worst ever made but which became a cult favorite through late-night screenings and international tours. He followed it with the documentary Homeless in America and the sitcom The Neighbors, and he appeared as the villain Linton Kitano in Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance (2015). He starred with Greg Sestero in Best F(r)iends: Volume 1 (2017) and Best F(r)iends: Volume 2 (2018), written by Sestero, and directed Big Shark (2023), which premiered that year. A 2017 adaptation of Sestero's memoir The Disaster Artist cast James Franco as Wiseau and earned Franco a Golden Globe.

About the name
Wiseau was nicknamed The Birdman because of his bird toys, which were then popular only in Europe. When he became a U.S. citizen, he legally changed his name to Thomas Pierre Wiseau, swapping the O in the French word oiseau for the W of his birth name.

Wiseau wrote The Room as an adaptation of his own unpublished 540-page novel, and the film went on to become a cult classic with late-night screenings worldwide.

Getting ready for a role
Sestero said the famous "You are tearing me apart, Lisa!" line in The Room was based on James Dean's cry of "You're tearing me apart!" in Rebel Without a Cause, and Wiseau has said Dean influenced him.
