Plot summary

Frederic Mason, a former priest, has prayed for swift penance since the death of Joanie, the young daughter he and his wife Ethel lost. His former colleague Graham worries about his occasional mental lapses. Doris, Joanie's birth mother, visits the couple at their isolated countryside home. That night a young man comes out of the woods with an injured foot and asks for help. He gives his name, Aaron Smith, and little else, but they let him stay. Unable to sleep, Aaron sits over tea with Frederic, says he was adopted too, and describes abusive parents and a force he says possessed him as a child before he collapses. In the morning Ethel sings while she cooks breakfast with him.
