Plot summary
In 1920s Algiers, Rabbi Sfar's cat eats the family parrot and gains the power of speech. The rabbi finds the cat rude and arrogant and begins teaching him the Torah. The cat reasons that if he is Jewish he should have a bar mitzvah, so the two consult the rabbi's rabbi. The cat mocks his strict views, and he declares the cat should be killed for heresy. The rabbi leaves with his cat, angry that the animal made a fool of his master. The two then agree that the rabbi will teach the cat the Torah and that a bar mitzvah may come when the cat is ready. Meanwhile, the rabbi's daughter Zlabya is growing into a teenager.
