Plot summary

Richard Wright has written a best-selling novel, Native Son, and he wants it staged on Broadway. He approaches Paul Green, a playwright who has won the Pulitzer Prize, and the two begin working together on an adaptation for the theater. Their collaboration unfolds in New York City and North Carolina before the war, and a friendship forms between them. Rehearsals go on as opening night in March 1941 draws closer. One page of the script becomes the point they cannot agree on, and the dispute widens to take in race, class and politics, and the question of what each man can decide for himself.
