Plot summary
Sarah, addicted to alcohol and drugs, supports her pimp, Duval, through prostitution and cannot care for her three daughters. Agnes, at fourteen the eldest, takes responsibility for Bee and Cammie. Sarah's house is known as the Poker House, where criminals and pimps gather for poker and to buy sex. Before the girls and their mother fled him, their father, a preacher, beat Sarah and her daughters. Agnes believes Duval, who is much older, is her boyfriend and loves her. Agnes wakes Bee for her paper route; Cammie has spent the night with her friend Sheila. Bee talks about living in a foster home and being adopted. Cammie passes the day in a bar, where she befriends Dolly, who runs it, and Stymie. Agnes rides through town, plays basketball, and picks up paychecks from part-time jobs.
