Trailer

Plot summary

For years, Max Baumstein has led an international organization that fights violations of human rights, and his wife Lina knows nothing of his childhood. One day he walks into the Paraguayan embassy in Paris and shoots the ambassador. The police arrest him, and he tries to tell Lina what brought him there. In Berlin in 1933, Max is a boy. Nazi thugs kill his father in front of him and beat the child, and he is lame afterward. A couple from the neighboring apartment, Michel and Elsa, take him in. When Nazis vandalize Michel's business, he sends Elsa and the boy by train to Paris and later forwards money through Maurice, a French salesman who helps them. Michel gets a five-year sentence in a concentration camp for his anti-Nazi activity, and Elsa and Max are left stranded in Paris.
