Plot summary
Rona is twenty-nine years old, and the past decade took her from the Orkney Islands, where she grew up, to London, where she studied biology, found freedom in clubs and met her boyfriend, Daynin. Her drinking hardened into alcoholism, and she has just completed a ninety-day rehabilitation program. She goes back to the islands, where her parents, who came from England, are separated; she divides her time between the two of them, working on her father's farm and meeting her mother's religious friends. The landscape of her childhood brings back difficult memories, and Rona finds it hard to connect with the people around her.
