Plot summary

A young lawyer in New York, Emilia Greenleaf marries Jack Woolf, the boss she fell in love with while he was still married. Their only daughter, Isabel, dies of SIDS, and Emilia learns she is sterile and cannot move on. Vilified as a homewrecker, she draws the unyielding anger of Jack's ex-wife, Carolyne Soule. She must also come to terms with her stepson, William, who repeatedly brings up her dead daughter and tells her that Jewish law did not count Isabel as a full person. Her attempts to bond with the boy do not go well and only make Carolyne and Jack think less of her.
