Plot summary
Lisa, a shoe designer from the United States, and Peter Ryman, a software chief from Northern Ireland, have been married for twenty-five years and live in Cambridge. Lisa travels often to Milan on business, and their grown daughter Abigail has a boyfriend, George, whom Peter does not approve of. While Lisa is away, Peter finds a voicemail and an email from a man named Ralph and a password-protected folder called Love. He has an employee trace the sender's address in Milan, then travels there and begins talking with Ralph at a chess cafe, keeping his own identity to himself while Ralph speaks about Lisa.
