Plot summary
A break-in at a San Francisco company's headquarters leaves an executive shot and a security guard beaten, and nothing is taken. The people behind it are urban revolutionaries, and they have carried off millions of dollars' worth of heroin from a company they describe as a front for drug trafficking. Their aim is to push the police into examining the company itself, and to use the drugs as a way to reach the leaders of the organization behind it. They bring San Francisco police lieutenant Virgil Tibbs into the matter. Tibbs takes the security guard into custody for questioning and agrees to work with the group if they cooperate with him.
