Eighteen-year-old Dizzy Harrison is a nerdy senior at Rocky Creek High in Austin, Texas, where he plays video games and makes funk rock with his friends Nora, Kirk, and Glen. After an embarrassing mishap with the school librarian leaves him despondent, he acts recklessly and lands temporarily in prison, where he meets an inmate named Luther. Dizzy decides the fix is a new school and a new self, so he gets himself expelled and enrolls at East Highland High as Gil Harris. Head cheerleader Danielle welcomes him, and her friend Courtney invites him to a party. He gives a speech that lifts the football team to its first win in years, and the coach and principal put him in charge of the homecoming dance.
