Plot summary
Sister Eileen leads a small mission in the outback, where Aboriginal boys are raised on Christian teaching and manual work. She keeps outsiders convinced that the priest in charge is still alive, forging letters to prove it, with help from a nun called Sister Mum and a man named George. A nine-year-old boy is brought in at night, with no English and no name, and he refuses shoes, clothing and the mission's rules. The other boys bully him until he stands his ground. He also conjures balls of light and heals sick animals. Then a carved Christ arrives for the church, and the boy is drawn to it.

- Warwick Thornton had originally imagined a Benedictine monk running the monastery and gave the film the working title Father and the Son, but switched the character's gender after deciding the poster and plot outline might give audiences the wrong idea, creating a part for Cate Blanchett.
- Warwick Thornton wrote the original script for The New Boy around 2005, drawing on his own experiences as a boy at a Benedictine monastery boarding school, and developed it with producer Kath Shelper.
