Martha Mattox
Biography
Martha Mattox was an American silent film actress. Born Eleanor Perry Mellen in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1879, she studied dramatic art at East Mississippi College and later taught at Holding Seminary. She began her acting career on the stage, appearing with the Marion Leonard Company among other engagements. She moved into motion pictures and made her film debut in 1915. Her early screen roles were in Westerns and action films, and she later performed in melodramas and comedies, playing a variety of parts throughout the silent era. She was most notable for playing Mammy Pleasant in The Cat and the Canary (1927). She also appeared in Torrent (1926). Mattox died in 1933.
