Plot summary

Born in India to a family that counts her as a dowry debt, the girl grows up able to find lost things and foresee calamities. Bandits carry her off, and she is found on a beach, where the First Mother takes her in and trains her among the young Mistresses of Spices. Named Tilo, she learns the rules of her calling: to attend to what others long for, never to leave the spice store, never to touch another person's skin, and never to use the spices for her own ends. She is trained to walk over fire, then sent to San Francisco to run the Spice Bazaar, where customers such as Haroun, Kwesi, Jagjit and Geeta's grandfather come for her spice mixtures. Then Doug, an architect, crashes his motorcycle outside, and Tilo, drawn to him, tends his injuries.
