Zohra Sehgal

Zohra Sehgal was an Indian actress, dancer, and choreographer whose career spanned more than eight decades. Born in 1912, she began performing with Uday Shankar's dance troupe in the 1930s, toured internationally, and later taught at his cultural center. She turned to acting in the 1940s, joining Prithvi Theatre and the Indian People's Theatre Association before making her film debut in Dharti Ke Lal in 1946 and appearing in Neecha Nagar, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. In Britain she appeared on television in The Jewel in the Crown (1984) and in films such as Bhaji on the Beach (1993). She returned to Indian cinema and became known for grandmotherly roles in Dil Se.. (1998), Veer-Zaara (2004), and Saawariya (2007). At 90 she starred in Chalo Ishq Ladaaye (2002). Her honors included the Padma Shri, Kalidas Samman, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, and Padma Vibhushan.
