Plot summary

In Qing times, Manchu and Han Chinese are forbidden to marry. Manchu soldier Ko Hung takes a Han wife, and when he refuses the emperor's command to kill her, soldiers execute her. He fights the palace guards and Sorcerer Bat, then seizes the child prince and flees. He finds an infant under a tree, adopts him as Shu-kan and hangs the prince's jade medallion around the boy's neck. More than a decade later, Sorcerer Bat finds the drunken Ko Hung and attacks him. In the fighting that follows, poison powder thrown by an assassin takes Ko's sight. Shu-kan sets out to find medicine for him, and meets Kei-moon and Tun-kap, two elderly Taoist priests who trained under the same master and quarrel over everything.
