Trailer

Plot summary

Destroying the Supreme Intelligence leaves the Kree home world of Hala barren, its air, water and sunlight gone, and the Kree blame Carol Danvers, calling her the Annihilator. Their new leader, Dar-Benn, recovers one of a legendary pair of Quantum Bands and uses it to force open a jump point. The rupture reaches a jump point near Earth's S.A.B.E.R. station, where Monica Rambeau investigates, while Danvers travels to the new one. Touching their jump points at the same moment moves Rambeau to Danvers's location and Danvers to the home of Kamala Khan, who wears the other Quantum Band in Jersey City. Kamala is moved to Rambeau's location, and the three fight off Kree enemies together, leaving Kamala's home destroyed.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The Marvels grossed $206.1 million worldwide and became the first box-office bomb and the lowest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, falling short of an estimated $439.6 million break-even point. Deadline Hollywood calculated its net losses at $237 million.
  • Nia DaCosta was the first Black woman hired as a director by Marvel Studios, and her hiring was expected to make The Marvels the biggest-budgeted film ever directed by a Black woman.
  • Nia DaCosta's original pitch for the film included Adam Warlock and time travel, but she was told Warlock was already set for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and that the series Loki had already dealt with time travel. She also cited the animated film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children as a reference for its fight scenes and ending.
  • The film underwent a "massive overhaul" and four weeks of reshoots reportedly to make the storyline coherent, and Kevin Feige reportedly became more involved than usual after the poor box office reception of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
  • Composer Laura Karpman wrote the film's main theme, "Higher. Further. Faster. Together", as a chosen-family theme that combines elements for Danvers, Rambeau and Kamala and ends with a choir chanting the words in Latin. The villain Dar-Benn's theme is played on flutes and was inspired by Herbie Hancock.
  • SPOILERZawe Ashton, who played the Kree leader Dar-Benn, said in February 2024 that an alternate ending was filmed in which Danvers perished along with Dar-Benn.
  • SPOILERKevin Feige personally called Kelsey Grammer about returning as Dr. Hank McCoy / Beast for the film's mid-credits scene, leveraging the relationship the two built when Feige worked on the X-Men film series.
