Plot summary
Jim Hanson served as a Marine Corps scout sniper in Vietnam and now lives a widowed life on the ranch he owns near the Arizona-Mexico line, alongside his dog Jackson. He is behind on the ranch's payments and phones in illegal border crossings to the Border Patrol, the agency that employs his stepdaughter Sarah. Rosa and her son Miguel, Mexican citizens, are running from the Mexican Mafia when he comes across them. While Jim calls the Border Patrol, Mauricio and his gang arrive and a shootout follows. Jim shoots Mauricio's brother dead and Rosa is fatally wounded. Dying, she gives Jim a bag of cash and the address of her family in Chicago, begging him to take Miguel there. Jim agrees unwillingly.
