Plot summary
Honey Daniels is a 22-year-old hip-hop dancer in East Harlem with a dream of choreographing music videos. She tends bar, works in a record store and teaches dance at the community center her mother runs, where she steers neighborhood kids away from the streets. A recorded dance-off with her rival Katrina brings her to the attention of video director Michael Ellis, who first hires her as a backup dancer and then as a choreographer. She brings her students along and makes Benny her assistant, while her mother keeps pressing her to teach ballet uptown. Honey begins dating Chaz, a barber. Michael, the director who gave her the break, wants more from her than her dancing.

- Co-writer Kim Watson said in a 2025 interview that he and Alonzo Brown wrote Honey at Universal Studios as a star vehicle for singer Aaliyah, who was to start dance rehearsals after her "Rock the Boat" video shoot; her death in 2001 meant the role was recast.
- Director Bille Woodruff denied the report that Aaliyah had been cast as Honey, saying in 2020 the part was meant for Beyoncé, who could not do it because of the touring schedule for her first album, Dangerously in Love.
- Honey was inspired by the life of choreographer Laurieann Gibson, who worked as the film's choreographer and also appeared on screen as Katrina, the main character's rival.
