Plot summary
Father Quart works for the Institute of External Affairs, the Vatican's intelligence arm. He is sent to Seville after a hacker breaks into the Vatican's security system and delivers the pope an anonymous plea naming two deaths at a church there. The building is a crumbling 17th century Baroque church that the plea says kills to defend itself. Ownership is contested. The estate around the church belongs to Macarena Bruner's family, while her estranged husband, the banker Pencho Gavira, wants a skyscraper on the site. A mass held for the estate's founder keeps the building beyond reach, and a sale would leave the diocese the richest in Spain.
