Plot summary

Livy Dunne is a Denver minister's daughter who studied archaeology in graduate school and hoped to travel. She is pregnant by a Navy flight instructor on furlough, so her father quietly compels her into a marriage, asking another minister to find a willing husband. Ray Singleton agrees to marry her without having met her. He has few chances of finding a wife in the remote farming region of southeastern Colorado, where young women are scarce. His parents died before the war and his brother Daniel was killed at Pearl Harbor. Livy arrives and is bored by talk of crops and weather. Ray, a man of few words, learns that her graduate treatise was on Heinrich Schliemann and checks out a book about him from the library. Livy befriends Florence and Rose Umahara, Japanese-American sisters interned at nearby Camp Amache.
