Plot summary
In 1905, British major Percy Fawcett brings down a stag for Archduke Franz Ferdinand's hunt in Ireland, then is snubbed at the party afterward. A year later the Royal Geographical Society sends him to South America, where Bolivia and Brazil are near war over a boundary that runs through the rubber trade. On the ship to Brazil he meets Corporal Henry Costin; at Baron de Gondoriz's jungle plantation they meet Lance Corporal Arthur Manley, who warns that the British government opposes more exploration. With guides and the Amazonian scout Tadjui the party finishes the survey. Tadjui's talk of a golden city means little to Fawcett until he finds broken pottery and small stone statues. Home again, his wife Nina finds a conquistador text about a city deep in the jungle, and Fawcett calls it the Lost City of Z.

- Brad Pitt was initially set to star as the explorer Percy Fawcett and produce the film through his company Plan B, but he withdrew from the lead in November 2010 over scheduling conflicts and stayed on only as producer.
- Benedict Cumberbatch signed on in September 2013 to play Percy Fawcett alongside Robert Pattinson as Henry Costin, but dropped out in February 2015 over scheduling conflicts; Charlie Hunnam replaced him and Sienna Miller was cast as his wife Nina.
- For its June 2017 release in China the film was trimmed by 37 minutes to 104 minutes; the producers made the cuts to help it do well commercially, because exhibitors there would not book films longer than two hours.
- The characters in the film say "zed", the British pronunciation of Z, but the British actors said "zee" in American versions of the promotional material to suit the local market.
