Plot summary
A former soldier in the Bengal Army, James Brooke arrives in Borneo in 1839, when the northeast of the island answers to the Brunei Sultanate. He helps Pengiran Indera Mahkota, the Sultan's governor, put down a local rebellion, and the Sultan rewards him with the governorship of Sarawak. Brooke rules the territory as an independent rajah and begins a campaign to stamp out piracy, slavery and headhunting. Around him are his cousin Crookshank, Crookshank's wife Elizabeth, his nephew Charley, his Iban bodyguard Tujang, Madame Lim and Princess Fatima, while the British Empire presses its own expansionist ambitions on the region.

- Jamie Bush, a cast member of Edge of the World, complained that the film does not reflect the true history of Sarawak; Sarawak's tourism minister Abdul Karim Hamzah replied that it should be treated as a movie, not a documentary.
