Plot summary
In 1307, Switzerland is a province under Habsburg rule, and Austrian soldiers brutalize the population, so rebellion is brewing. Swiss nobles such as Rudenz of Attinghausen and Werner Stauffacher try to stay in the Habsburgs' favor. Rudenz loves Bertha, King Albert's niece; she resents her uncle's tyranny. In Unterwalden, an Austrian tax collector called the Wolfshot attacks the household of farmer Konrad Baumgarten, who kills him and flees. William Tell, a war-weary Crusader veteran skilled with the crossbow, helps him cross a storm-tossed lake. King Albert then installs Albrecht Gessler as bailiff in Schwyz, and Gessler pursues Bertha. Baumgarten and Tell take shelter with Werner Stauffacher and his wife Gertrude. Gessler searches the house for Baumgarten, finds nothing, and leaves suspicious. Gertrude presses Tell to join a rising against the Austrians, though he holds back.
