Plot summary
Clay Hewitt, a drifter, comes to a small Kansas town in 1955 and looks for work to pay his way to an older brother in California. He courts Kitty, the local beauty queen, and makes a friend of the farmhand Earl, who helps him get hired at the cattle farm of Delilah Ashford Potts. The wealthy widow is known for taking her young employees to bed; Clay turns down her advances and earns a rival in her current lover, Joel Carter. He also befriends her son Joseph, called Flyboy, an introverted young man lately out of a psychiatric institution whose only company is his late father's aging bull. Delilah has him cook and clean for the hands, who treat him badly, and Clay takes his side.
