Plot summary
In the northern French town of Bailleul, Freddy is unemployed and epileptic. He lives with his mother, who runs a small bar, and attends hospital appointments. He spends his days with four unemployed friends, and a sixth member of their group is in hospital with AIDS. The five belong to an all-male marching band that has a female majorettes section. Freddy's girlfriend Marie works as a supermarket cashier, and their relationship is sexual, though he shows her no joy or passion. Freddy's friends turn their aggressive feelings toward the local Arab immigrants, among them Kader, a young man from a North African family.
