Plot summary
Liam Somers is a PhD student in English literature at Oxford who has spent years on a novel he cannot finish. Through a tutoring agency he is offered a post with a wealthy family: Bertie Sinclair needs help preparing for a university entrance exam. Liam moves to the family's country estate, where a small house is set aside for him, close to the study of Bertie's father, J.M. Sinclair, the celebrated author whose work Liam admires and who has not published in years. Bertie's French mother, Hélène, is an artist; a near-silent butler, Ellis, also lives on the estate. Liam and Bertie get along, but Hélène keeps her distance and J.M. is domineering, and the house holds a history that no one in it will discuss.
