Ben Garvey lives in Dallas with his wife Lisa and their daughter Katie while on probation, working at a brewery. His brother Ricky, just out of prison, proposes stealing gold dust from a laboratory. Ben turns him down until his record gets him fired. He joins Ricky and Phelps. The robbery fails, and Ben is convicted of murder and sentenced to lethal injection. After saying goodbye to Lisa and Katie, he wakes at Monte Angel, a community in Dundee, Oregon, where Father Ezra takes him on as a groundskeeper and tells him his old life is over and a second chance has begun, provided he never crosses the boundaries of the place.
